Here's what I've since learned about the phrase shelf stable.

It's a real thing and it's not marketing. Manufacturers do test how long a product tolerates being outside its storage range, and those windows are genuine. Under laboratory conditions, at a stated temperature, for a stated number of days.

The unmeasured baseline

But that window assumes something nobody in the chain can confirm: that it was inside the range the rest of the time.

It explains why the number on the front might not match the number inside. The sensor sits where the sensor sits. The vial sits somewhere else.

And it explains why nobody in this category ever tells you the room temperature. Because the moment you state the ambient, the claim gets smaller.

Reason 05

Any temperature claim without a room attached is just a number

Once I understood that, I started reading product pages differently.
